Skin Donation Procedure – Skin Bank Bangalore

Skin donation is a simple and noble process that can help save lives.

Steps for Skin Donation:

  1. Inform the Skin Bank – After the passing of a potential donor, the next of kin should immediately call the 24-hour Burns Helpline of the National Burns Centre (NBC): 022-27793333.
  2. Verification & Consent – The Skin Retrieval Team will assess the cause of death and any contraindications before proceeding. A death certificate and consent from the next of kin are required.
  3. Skin Retrieval – A specialized Skin Bank vehicle will arrive at the location. The team will carefully harvest skin only from the legs, thighs, and back using a medical instrument called a dermatome. This ensures that only a thin layer of skin is taken, without causing any disfigurement to the donor’s body.
  4. Completion & Preservation – The procedure takes about 45 minutes. The retrieval team will clean and shave the area, harvest the skin, and preserve it in 50% glycerol for further processing. The donor’s body is then respectfully handed back to the family.

By donating skin, you can help burn victims heal and improve their quality of life. One donation can make a significant difference! 💙
